When should I start reading with my baby?
Several studies point to a relationship between shared reading (adults and children looking at books together) and future literacy skills. One strong predictor of future language skills and reading enjoyment is the age at which shared reading starts. Babies who have been read to from an early age tend to become life-long readers.
Board books: Some parents complain, "Reading to my baby is frustrating because my child tries to eat the book instead of listen to it!" Board books are the solution to the oral investigation stage. Chewing on a board book is a way that your child is exploring books. First they drool on them - then they read them!
Many board books are available at every Library location. Ask your librarian to recommend board books for you and your baby.
Create an environment conducive to reading:
Have lots of books around the house, from infancy onward.
Have these books where children can reach them at ANY time.
Read regularly (every day if possible) from infancy onward.
Talk with children about the stories and things around them. Let
them talk, ask questions, and make up answers.
Talk, sing, make up rhymes with children from infancy onward.
Tell stories about yourself or family out loud.

Toddlers 2-3 years
Toddlers love activity and the chance to practice their growing language skills. You can use these traits to advance your toddler's pre-reading skills. Involve toddlers in the reading experience by asking them questions and having them expand on the stories you read to them. Toddlers who talk about the illustrations, characters, setting, actions and other aspects of books step up the development of their reading skills.

Preschool 3-5 years
Preschoolers are almost ready to read! Reading together is a very special time for you and your child. The more children are exposed to quality books and the fun of reading, the more they will learn to value the experience. Remember that your child will copy your actions. For example, if you pick up a book to read when you have a few free minutes, chances are your child will, too. If you read to your child with enthusiasm and change your voice to match the character or situation, they will copy that also.

Al masticar un libro de cartón su hijo explora los libros. ¡Primero ellos babean en los libros—luego los lee!
Muchos libros de cartón están disponibles en todas las localidades de la Biblioteca. Pídale al bibliotecario que recomiende libros de cartón para usted y su bebé.
Para crear un ambiente favorable para la lectura:
Tener a mano muchos libros en la casa desde la infancia en adelante.
Poner los libros en un lugar donde los niños los pueden alcanzar.
Leer con regularidad (todos los días si es posible) desde la infancia en adelante.
Hablar con los hijos acerca de los cuentos y los objetos que los rodean. Dejarlos hablar, hacer preguntas e inventar respuestas.
Hablar, cantar e inventar rimas con los niños desde la infancia en adelante.
Contarles cuentos en voz alta sobre si mismo o sobre la familia.

Niños pequeños de 2-3 años
Al niño pequeño le encantan la actividad y la oportunidad de practicar sus crecientes habilidades del lenguaje. Usted puede aprovechar estos rasgos para avanzar las habilidades de lectura del niño pequeño. Haga que los niños pequeños participen en la experiencia de la lectura, preguntándoles por la acción del cuento y haciendo que profundicen en las historias. Los niños que hablan sobre las ilustraciones, los personajes, los escenarios, las acciones y otros elementos de los libros avanzan notablemente en el desarrollo de sus habilidades para la lectura.

Preescolar 3-5 años
¡Los preescolares ya están prácticamente listos para leer! Leer juntos es un momento muy especial para usted y su hijo. Cuanto más tiempo los niños estén expuestos a los libros de calidad y al disfrutar de leer, más van a valerse de la experiencia. Recuerde que su hijo va a imitar sus acciones. Por ejemplo: si usted lee un libro cuando tenga algunos minutos libres, es más probable que su hijo también haga lo mismo. Si le lee a su hijo con entusiasmo y cambia la voz para reflejar los personajes o la situación, el niño va a imitar esto también.
